Backyard Habitats: Turtle Trapping

Backyard Habitats: Turtle Trapping

Event Description

Backyard habitat is simply a space with a combination of food, water, shelter, and plants in a configuration conducive to the needs of wildlife. Since everyone's backyard is a little different, this workshop will provide an introduction to backyard and wildlife habitats you can find in The Natural State, or you can create or restore in your rural, urban, or suburban backyards. Two Arkansas Game and Fish Wildlife Biologists have teamed up to provide direction, information, and resources for restoring, establishing, and maintaining your "backyard habitats," with an emphasis on native Arkansas species and especially pollinators!

Classroom for 60 people.
ASU student, Abby McIver, has been trapping turtles at the Nature Center for several months. She now has enough data to present her findings to the public and also let you get your hands dirty with some turtle trapping yourself. During this program, she will cover what kind of turtles we have in the area, how to access their health, and the best habitat practices to keep these animals safe and happy in their environments. After a short discussion, the classroom will shift to the outdoors where participants will assist with trapping, measuring, weighing, and ID’ing the turtles for further research needs. Registration is required for this program and it is open for all ages.
