Backyard Habitats: Birds of Arkansas

Event Description

Backyard habitat is simply a space with a combination of food, water, shelter, and plants in a configuration conducive to the needs of wildlife. Since everyone's backyard is a little different, this workshop will provide an introduction to backyard and wildlife habitats you can find in The Natural State, or you can create or restore in your rural, urban, or suburban backyards. Two Arkansas Game and Fish Wildlife Biologists have teamed up to provide direction, information, and resources for restoring, establishing, and maintaining your "backyard habitats," with an emphasis on native Arkansas species and especially pollinators!

Do you know which bird species actually live in bird houses? Do you ever wonder where the best place to place a birdhouse in your yard would be? Join us as we learn about the birds of Arkansas and build houses to prepare for the fall and winter roosting season. We will discuss different backyard birds that live in the state and why leaving a bird box up year-round can be beneficial for our native species. Participants will also build their own bird house to take home, along with advice for proper installation on their property. By following these tips and tricks, you’ll be able to identify and support your local birds! Each participant will also receive a copy of the "Backyard Birds" pocket guide and a copy of our "Wings Over Arkansas" program. This program is open to all ages and registration is required to ensure we have enough materials.
