Backyard Habitats: Bats of Arkansas
Event Description
Backyard habitat is simply a space with a combination of food, water, shelter, and plants in a configuration conducive to the needs of wildlife. Since everyone's backyard is a little different, this workshop will provide an introduction to backyard and wildlife habitats you can find in The Natural State, or you can create or restore in your rural, urban, or suburban backyards. Two Arkansas Game and Fish Wildlife Biologists have teamed up to provide direction, information, and resources for restoring, establishing, and maintaining your "backyard habitats," with an emphasis on native Arkansas species and especially pollinators!

We are celebrating Bat Week a little early at the Nature Center! Bat Week officially takes place October 24 through October 31st. Join us and learn why we celebrate bats, discover ways to participate in various activities across the state, and discuss conservation efforts as we build bat boxes together. Arkansas is home to 16 different species of bats, and they all play important roles in the ecosystem as pest controllers and pollinators. Not to mention, they are the unofficial mascot of Halloween. The morning portion of this class will be spent discussing bats, exploring National Bat Week, and working on ways to identify these tiny yet mighty superheroes. After a quick lunch break, we will then start making bat boxes for you to take home and hang in your backyard. This class is open to all ages and registration is required to ensure we have enough materials.
